Supporting Leasehold Reform

As many constituents are aware, I have been campaigning in parliament to secure a fair deal for those affected by the current leasehold scandal. I questioned Sajid Javid directly on this issue at a recent CLG select committee, and have also followed this up further with letters and questions. I have another meeting with residents affected shortly, and I continue to demand action from the government.

My colleague Justin Madders has secured a Ten Minute Rule Bill on this issue, which I fully support. Unfortunately, due to prior constituency business I am unable to be in parliament for the bill itself - but I have written to the government to make clear my support.

As followers of parliamentary procedure will be aware, Ten Minute Rule Bills don't in themselves change policy - that needs government support. Indeed if this government were taking this issue as seriously as they should, we wouldn't have to be using backbench or select committee procedures to raise and take forward an issue, we would be debating a proper piece of legislation. I'm sure it would have our support if the government did come to us with a genuine proposal to end these disgraceful practices, and offer a fair solution to those already impacted.

I, and my colleagues, will continue to demand that they do come forward with such plans.
