Response to Ince Marshes Proposal

The British Geological Survey have recently announced proposals for a significant piece of development and research work at Ince Marshes.

I’ll be asking for an urgent meeting to seek assurances about the nature of the project and will continue to monitor developments in the area closely.   Although research into alternative energy sources is needed, many in my constituency will be rightly concerned that this could pave the way for fracking...

Challenging Justine Greening on Funding Cuts

I recently challenged the Secretary of State for Education Justine Greening in the Commons about underspending on aged 16-19 education. As well as cutting overall funding three times since 2011, her department has also underspent on 16-19 education by £135 million in 2014/15, and £132 million in 2015/16.

She dodged the question because the government knows it is underfunding our education system and letting our young people down. I will...

Leasehold Issues - taking action in parliament

I recently wrote to Communities Secretary Sajid Javid after a number of constituents in Northwich contacted me about leaseholds.

The government is currently consulting on plans to stop the practice in the future, but that doesn’t help those who are already in this situation, so I’m calling on them to expand the scope of these reforms to those already impacted.

I will be raising this face to face with him...

Brexit - Government must change direction

Few issues have proven as politically divisive as Brexit, and I recently joined Labour colleagues and others from across the House of Commons trying to force a change in direction from the government in its approach to the passage of Brexit through Parliament.

Firstly, I want to emphasise that this Bill is not about whether Britain leaves the EU. That issue was settled by the referendum result and the Article...

Devolution for Cheshire - but government mustn't dictate how

I have written a piece for the Labour List website calling for greater power, funding and responsibility to be devolved to all our area - but via an approach that is chosen and shaped by us locally, rather than central government.

Visiting the Bowling Green Pub

As a passionate supporter of the great British pub – and someone who likes the occasional ale – it was great to visit the team at The Bowling Green pub in Northwich recently.

It’s had £230,000 refurb after closing its doors earlier this year and created 12 new jobs in the constituency.

There’s something very special about the British pub and it’s been a difficult time for the industry this...

I’d like to thank them for everything they continue to do for local residents –...

My Meeting with Halton OPEN
