I was concerned, but not surprised to hear the Prime Minister make clear publicly her support for Fracking, and that of the Conservative Government.
Her comments prove that from the top down, the Tory party are in favour of Fracking, and are ignoring the concerns raised by environmentalists, local Labour MPs and most importantly of all, residents here in Weaver Vale and elsewhere.
Whilst we always knew that this was true, what was most concerning was that the Prime Minister referred to a plan to bring forward further proposals on Fracking later in the parliament.
Whilst we know from the Tory manifesto that they are in favour of more Fracking, I will be urgently demanding answers from the Prime Minister and the government demanding to know exactly what these proposals are, who they have been discussed with, and making clear that I and Labour colleagues will oppose any measures to support the Fracking Industry, measures that I fear will once again ignore the concerns residents have.
We will not accept decisions and plans being made behind closed doors in Downing Street that have the potential to adversely affect the environment, landscape and communities we represent.
Having made clear that she is in favour of Fracking, the Prime Minister must now come clean on what the proposals she referred to are, and be honest with the people of Weaver Vale about her party’s support for this controversial technology, and her government’s plans to legislate to promote and develop it even further.
