One of the starkest examples of how this Tory Government is failing the most vulnerable in our society is their disastrous implementation of Universal Credit.
I have seen here in parts of Weaver Vale the major effect this failure is having on residents and families, with delays, unreasonable demands, sanctions and requirements causing distress, confusion and hardship to far too many.
I recently signed a letter along with fellow MPs calling for a pause in the rollout of Universal Credit in the Northwich area of Weaver Vale – and it is therefore hugely disappointing to see that David Gauke, Work and Pensions Secretary has refused to heed the call this week.
Myself, and other MPs are dealing on a daily basis with the fallout of a policy that is being implemented poorly. This is not as a result of hardworking staff in our Jobcentres, who are committed to supporting residents, as I saw at first hand in Northwich recently. It is due to a government that is refusing to change course in delivering an operational approach to Universal Credit that is not fit for purpose, and indifferent to the human cost to those most affected.
I will continue to do all I can to ensure that the government changes direction on this vital matter – and of course if any Weaver Vale residents are experiencing difficulties then please contact me and I will do all I can to help. I’m pictured with colleagues from Cheshire West CAB one of a number of local CABs here in Weaver Vale who are also available to help constituents with advice.
