I broadly welcome the Chancellor’s announcement of more support for business, which includes measures myself and Labour colleagues have been calling for for some time.
Our calls for the introduction of a system of targeted wage support had been knocked back by the government 20 times, but I’m pleased to see common sense has prevailed and they have now agreed to introduce these measures.
Sadly this has come too late for some who have already lost their jobs because employers were concerned there would be no wage support following the end of October.
In fact, the deadline for redundancy consultations by large firms before the end of the furlough scheme, came and went in early September.
As with all things with Boris Johnson’s government, sadly words and deeds don’t always meet in the middle, and we’ll have to see what further detail emerges.
It’s vital though that the measures not only support existing jobs and businesses, but also help those who’ve lost their jobs in recent weeks and months back into employment.
